This week: Natalie Portman is a repressed ballerina about to bloom into something scary, Disney's latest animated fairy tale, the return of Donald Draper and a twisted thriller starring Hilary Swank.
Black Swan: See why Natalie Portman won a Best Actress Oscar as she transforms from a delicate ballerina into a full-feathered fright burning with the fire of sexual awakening in this surreal dark drama by Darren Aronofsky. (Read the full review with extras info in Disc-y Business tomorrow.)
Tangled: The 50th animated feature from Disney will delight the wee ones with its twist on the Grimm fairy tale, Rapunzel. Flynn Rider is the kingdom's most wanted—and charming—bandit who takes refuge in a mysterious tower where he finds Rapunzel, a spirited teen with 70 feet of magical hair. Together they set off on a fantastical journey in this adventure featuring the voices of Mandy Moore, Zachary Levi, Donna Murphy and Ron Perlman. Best extras: All versions contain the "50th Animated Feature Countdown" and two original storybook openings; the Blu-ray and Blu-ray 3D add several making-of featurettes, three deleted scenes, extended songs and "Nine Tangled Teasers." Blu-ray Bob's Verdict: Buy Me (if you have a little princess in the house).
The Resident: Two-time Oscar winner Hilary Swank slums it in this Hammer Films stinker as a doctor who rents a renovated New York apartment that has it all: a reasonable rent, spacious rooms, a view of the Brooklyn Bridge and a handsome landlord (Jeffery Dean Morgan) who lives in the building with his grandfather (Christopher Lee). Too bad the resident handyman develops an unhealthy attraction to his new tenant. How, you ask? Mr. Landlord frequently crawls through the walls into Swank's apartment and drugs her so that he can sleep under her bed, lick her fingers while she sleeps and use her toothbrush with fetishistic delight. Swank—who is arriving late to work due to all the date-rape drugs in her system—sets up security cameras to find out what is going on in her home and discovers convincing evidence to withhold rent for good in this ridiculous psychosexual thriller. Best extras: Only a trailer. Blu-ray Bob's Verdict: Forget Me
Mad Men: Season Four: AMC's series about ad executives during the Kennedy era remains the classiest drama on TV. In this season, the new agency Sterling Cooper Draper Pryce launches with a new set of rules and a reporter from Advertising Age asking, "Who is Donald Draper?" This single question permeates the entire season as we watch Draper (Jon Hamm)—a playboy, divorced husband, father, ad genius and drunk—grapple with his professional and personal lives imploding. The best of the 13 episodes is "The Suitcase," in which Don and Peggy (Elisabeth Moss) are trapped in an office trying to crack a tough assignment and their little revelations speak a larger truth. Best extras: Both the DVD and Blu-ray contain "Divorce: Circa 1960s," "How to Succeed in Business Draper Style," "Marketing the Mustang: An American Icon," "1964 Presidential Campaign" and commentaries. Blu-ray Bob's Verdict: Buy Me
