Charlie Sheen’s batting .500 when it comes to his Detroit radio partnerships.
The unpredictable star of Saturday night’s event at the Fox Theatre worked out radio promotions this week with two Detroit stations:
• WKQI-FM (95.5)’s “Mojo in the Morning” show helped the former “Two and a Half Men” star launch a YouTube contest to find a singer to open his Detroit show with “The Star-Spangled Banner.”
• Over on WRIF-FM (101.1), Sheen recruited the “Drew and Mike” show to help attract a female intern, apparently for a planned onstage bit.
Both contests were supposed to end Friday with Sheen calling in to the stations to announce the winners. But producers from both shows got calls late Thursday afternoon asking for the scheduled Friday morning interviews to be changed to around 9 p.m. Thursday.
Mojo and on-air compatriot Spike caught up with Sheen on Thursday night and played their interview this morning. During the segment, Sheen revealed that rapper Snoop Dogg will be flying to Detroit and appear at the Fox Theatre with him. The hip-hop head and the sitcom star have been rumored to be working on a song specifically for the tour.
Sheen also decided he wanted two Detroiters to sing the national anthem: Redford resident Kelley Jean and Highland’s Lisa Jacques. You can watch their auditions on YouTube.com.
Kelley Jean, owner of an adult-oriented Web site and of Good Life Limo, said her life is always a “big crazy circus,” and all along she felt she’d attract Sheen’s attention.
“Really, I didn’t try to glam up or rock a bikini or anything. I wanted to be myself and win it for my voice,” she said.
Jacques, who is an Oakland University student, said she recorded her clip from her home Wednesday and entered because she “really just loves to sing.”
“I think he’s pretty cool, but I was really nervous to talk to him Thursday night because I didn’t know if he’d be really crazy,” Jacques said. “This is very exciting. And he was very nice.”
Mojo said his listeners today almost thought that the Sheen interview was an April Fools' Day joke because Sheen’s “almost a parody of himself.” Mojo added that more than 1,000 metro Detroiters sent in YouTube links for the contest.
“It’s definitely going to be a carnival in the Fox Saturday,” he said of the show. “I have a feeling it might be a free-for-all up there (on the stage). Hopefully they’re organized and there’s not a lag time from the different things he has planned because the crowd won’t want to be waiting around for the next thing to happen.”
Over on the other end of the dial, things played out a little differently. “Drew and Mike” hosts Drew Lane and Mike Clark hoped their originally scheduled interview would happen today, and confirmed a time with Sheen’s handlers that they’d get him on the phone at 5 a.m. But, despite numerous calls, including a conversation with Sheen’s “personal assistant,” the warlock never connected with the WRIF team.
“We obviously would’ve liked to have talked to him like it was supposed to happen, but I think the suspense made for an interesting show,” Lane said with a laugh. “When he’s hungry to do an interview, he’s shown that he knows how to use the 'hot line.’ And when he calls a show on the East Coast, he knows there’s a time difference. It’s been good fun though.”
Lane added that he’s still excited to see what happens at the show Saturday and said the buildup has been “wild.”
“I’m looking forward to the show just as much as before,” Lane said. “I can’t imagine what it’s going to be. We’ll soon learn if it’s a grand slam or a strikeout.”
Although Sheen didn’t call in to “Drew and Mike” today, he did pick the winner of the intern promotion.
Westland resident Heather Pachota, a Wayne State University graduate, learned at about 10:30 a.m. today that she’ll be joining Sheen onstage Saturday.
“I thought it was an April Fools' Day joke when I got the call,” she told the Free Press. “It’s exciting, but I’m a little nervous to see what’s going on, what I’ll be doing.”
Pachota said she thought it’d be interesting to apply for the “internship,” and on the brief e-mailed application she described herself as a person who likes to make other people laugh.
“I’m a big fan of pop culture and Charlie’s at the epicenter of that right now,” Pachota said. “Whether you agree with him as a person or not, it’s going to be a very interesting show.”
